OVERVIEW OF YEAR 7 DESIGN
"Design is the link between innovation and creativity, taking thoughts and exploring the possibilities and constraints associated with products or systems, allowing them to redefine and manage the generation of further thought through prototyping, experimentation and adaptation. It is human-centred and focuses on the needs, wants and limitations of the end-user."
- The International Baccalaureate
Design is about problem solving. It is about empathising with our fellow human beings, questioning our impact upon the world and refining our systems to accommodate a world that is constantly shifting. Design takes a watchful eye to investigate how we can make things better. In Year 7, students study four units in Design: Augmented reality & Animation, Coding & Printmaking, Product Design, and Puppet Making.
MYP uses the design cycle, a way to structure inquiry and analysis of problems, development of feasible solutions, the creation of solutions, and testing and evaluation of the student’s solution for the design problem.
UNIT 1 “Animate Me in Augmented Reality”
Statement of Inquiry: Our perspective of ourselves and our own identity within a community allows us to make connections and build relationships with each other.
Global Context: Identities and Relationships (Exploration - process & solutions)
Key Concept: Communities
Related Concepts: Connections and Perspective
Assessment:
Criterion B: Developing ideas
Criterion C: Creating the solution
Criterion D: Evaluating
ATL’s
9.C - Create novel solutions to authentic problems
9.D - Make unexpected or unusual connections between objects and/ or ideas
10.G - Transfer current knowledge to learning new technologies
Unit 2: (Trash) Puppet making
Interdisciplinary Unit with English (Storm boy)
Statement of Inquiry: The development of innovative and sustainable products increases our understanding of how everything is connected
Global Context: Globalisation and Sustainability (Exploration: products)
Key Concept: Development
Related Concepts: Innovation and Sustainability
Assessment:
Criterion A: Inquiring and analysing
Criterion B: Developing ideas
Criterion C: Creating the solution
ATL’s
8.A - Practise observing carefully in order to recognise problems
9.C - Create novel solutions to authentic problems
9.F - Design new machines, media and technologies
9.G - Make guesses, ask “what if” questions to generate testable hypotheses
10.F - Combine knowledge, understanding and skills to create products or solutions
UNIT 3: “Back to Mesopotamia”
Interdisciplinary Unit with I & S
Statement of Inquiry: Cultural identity is created as a result of events and changes in time, place and space and is passed on to others through meaningful communication.
Global Context: Personal and Cultural Expression
Key Concept: Time, Place and Space
Related Concepts: Form & FunctionA
Assessment:
Criterion A: Inquiring and analysing
Criterion C: Creating the solution
ATL’s
8.Q - Use models and simulations to explore complex systems and issues
9.E - Design improvements to existing machines, media and technologies
UNIT 4: Coding & Printmaking
Statement of Inquiry: “Product creativity is influenced by changing markets and trends”
Global Context: Personal and Cultural Expression (Exploration: Products)
Key Concept: Creativity
Related Concepts: Markets and Trends
Assessment
Criterion A: Inquiring and Analysis
Criterion B: Developing ideas
Criterion C: Creating the solution
ATL’s
3.C - Keep and use a weekly planner for assignments
6.J - Understand and use technology systems
8.J - Evaluate and manage risk
8.S - Troubleshoot systems and applications
