A SUSTAINABLE TENT THAT COLLECTS RAINWATER, FOLDS UP FOR EASY TRANSPORT AND STORES SOLAR ENERGY
"Design is the link between innovation and creativity, taking thoughts and exploring the possibilities and constraints associated with products or systems, allowing them to redefine and manage the generation of further thought through prototyping, experimentation and adaptation.
It is human-centred and focuses on the needs, wants and limitations of the end-user."

Design is about problem solving. It is about empathising with our fellow human beings, questioning our impact upon the world and refining our systems to accommodate a world that is constantly shifting. Design takes a watchful eye to investigate how we can make things better. Here Abeer Seikaly combined her empathy for the plight of refugees with her concern for the environment to create a tent that meets the needs of a displaced people. She identified a need - shelter - and combined it with sustainable design to construct a tent that was weatherproof, insulated for both cold and warm weather, has a water catchment and solar battery for power at night. Not only is this tent lightweight and durable, but inspired by weaving to create a design that is also beautiful to look at. It is holistic design at its best.

What design looks like at PreshilThe projects that we develop at Preshil are focused around both Digital & Product Design.
Some of the projects that we are developing include : Design for YOU - Web design (to set up E-folio) - Amulets of Protection (design an amulet to build digital rendering/illustration skills and then transfer onto a 3D medium) (allows them to develop some base-level skills in digital manipulation) - Redesign Chess using 3D software & create a prototype using a 3D printer - create a Preshil Chess club Design Narratives & Animation (?) - Digital storytelling (refugee interdisciplinary unit with June in English?) - Animation - Film Design Designing Spaces - Interior Design - Architecture/Planning Software Design - Game Design (IDU with Science) - App Design |
Design Anthropology - Design for civilisations (IDU with Drama) - Design investigations into developing nations Design for Change - Social awareness/activism - solutions could be 2D or 3D - Film Design (Social awareness slant) Design Communication - Print media & Propaganda Design in the Desert - Real-world collaboration with NT Designers to explore urban planning of remote areas using Minecraft Sustainable Design - Bauhaus - Up-cycled furniture Film Design - Students will create their own briefs (year 5 MYP requirement) |
