Design is about problem solving. It is about empathising with our fellow human beings, questioning our impact upon the world and refining our systems to accommodate a world that is constantly shifting. Design takes a watchful eye to investigate how we can make things better. In Year 7, students study four units in Design: Augmented reality & Animation, Coding & Printmaking, Product Design, and Puppet Making.
MYP uses the design cycle, a way to structure inquiry and analysis of problems, development of feasible solutions, the creation of solutions, and testing and evaluation of the student’s solution for the design problem.
"Design is the link between innovation and creativity, taking thoughts and exploring the possibilities and constraints associated with products or systems, allowing them to redefine and manage the generation of further thought through prototyping, experimentation and adaptation. It is human-centred and focuses on the needs, wants and limitations of the end-user."

UNIT 1: Melbourne Design Week - Waste Challenge
Driving Question: “‘How can design shape the future?”
Statement of Inquiry: Waste from one product can be used as a raw material for another, which results in developing a resource neutral process.
Global Context: Personal and Cultural Expression (Exploration: Products)
Key Concept: Creativity
Related Concepts: Markets and Trends
Assessment
Criterion A: Inquiring and Analysis
Criterion B: Developing ideas
Criterion C: Creating the solution
ATL’s
3.C - Keep and use a weekly planner for assignments
6.J - Understand and use technology systems
8.J - Evaluate and manage risk
8.S - Troubleshoot systems and applications
Melbourne Design Week is Australia’s leading annual international design event. In 2019 it will run from the 14th of March to the 24th of March. We link creativity with business and community, providing a platform for the Australian design industry to express, question, propose and test ideas.
In 2019 the theme Design Experiments asks Melbourne Design Week participants to experiment with ideas, materials, places, and processes to respond to the central question ‘How can design shape the future?’.
